Tokyo Olympic to be held: Yes or No?

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach announced that there is no plan B and Tokyo 2020 will be held on July 23th as scheduled. IOC also stated that the Olympics will be taken place with spectators. This is a highly doubtful decision. Although the Japanese government is content with this announcement, the Japanese public sentiment is skeptical. After the postponement of the game to 2021 due to a coronavirus outbreak, the Japanese government has lost over about 6.3 billion US dollars. If the game is postponed again or canceled, the loss will surge to approximately 10 billion dollars or 42.3 billion dollars. Then what would be the best choice regarding the way that Tokyo Olympic is taking place?

Skepticism about hosting the game is above 80% according to the recent poll by Sankei. The majority of Japanese people answered they should cancel or postpone the Olympics. Japan is now going through the third wave of pandemic and the average daily tally is 2,000 to 3,000. The figure for new cases is relatively low compared to other countries but the government expanded its state of emergency for another month as they are facing the worst wave. Amid these, the influx of many people (e.g., athletes, staff, and spectators, etc.) from abroad may cause another wave in Japan.

IOC said that vaccination of athletes and spectators is recommended but is not required as the vaccine delivery is delayed than expected. The committee will scan everyone involved but there will certainly be the asymptomatic and carriers in the incubation period. These people can be super-spreaders. As Japan is struggling in a battle against coronavirus, there is a hospital bed shortage and medical facilities are now packed and there is no room to accept more patients. If another wave happens due to the game, this can make the medical system in Japan collapse.

Olympics were failed to be held four times during the war, but this was before this game became a commercial sports business and an astronomical amount of money was spent on it. Going through an unprecedented epidemic, people should be prepared as though they are in the war. The head of the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, said they are performing several simulations of non-spectator, 50% spectators, and 100% spectators and they will come to a conclusion by March.

Given that Olympics is not just a game, but a festival that brings everyone together around the world, it can give hope to many people struggling during this pandemic. Furthermore, there are a huge number of athletes longing for their dream stage. Tokyo Olympics should be held but with strict regulations and preventive measures. This includes a vaccination requirement for everyone involved and limits on the capacity of spectators. Along with the health and security-first policy, the Olympics can be organized safely and can bring joy globally.
